The age at which you expect to retire is the foundation for all your retirement planning: your savings goals, your portfolio weighting, and even your risk profile are all configured according to your time horizon. But what happens if that timeline shifts? A recent survey found the average age of today’s retirees is 59 — well before Social Security benefits kick in. 18% of retirees had to stop working due to health issues, and 9% lost their job and couldn’t find another; all in all, over one-third (36%) of today’s retirees say they didn’t have a choice in when they retired. If your retirement plan is based on the assumption that you’ll work until age 65, this CNBC article outlines ways you can prepare today for the possibility that your career may not last as long as you think.
