For years, it has been assumed that success or failure in financial markets had primarily to do with the quality of the investments themselves and little to do with human behavior. However, more current research has found that investor behavior is one of the central determinants of financial well-being. For instance, while the S&P 500 has returned over 8% over the last 20 years, the average investor in the market has taken home a paltry 4%. This gulf between market returns and realized returns is known as the "behavior gap," and savvy investors are realizing their behavior plays as big a role in their financial success as the assets in which they are invested.
