Scammers are increasingly targeting older adults with offers of free in-home services like cooking, cleaning, and health care in exchange for your Medicare number. These fraudulent schemes aim to sign individuals up for unnecessary hospice care, allowing the scammer to bill Medicare for services that aren’t actually needed.
Hospice care is a specialized service for individuals with a terminal illness and is only available if a doctor certifies that the person has a life expectancy of six months or less. Fraudulent hospice enrollment could affect your Medicare coverage and lead to unwanted consequences.
- Never share your Medicare number with anyone offering free services. You should only share your number with your doctor, insurers acting on your behalf, or trusted people in your community who work with Medicare (like your State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or SHIP).
- Avoid signing up for hospice care in exchange for perks such as money, groceries, or gift cards.
- Be cautious of anyone claiming to represent Medicare and trying to sign you up for services at your door. Medicare does not offer "free" services such as housekeeping or cooking and they will never come to your home to sign you up for such services.
